Methodological Issues in Literacy Research Across Languages: Evidence From Alphabetic Orthographies

چکیده
Research on literacy has become universal and is essential for researchers of various disciplines, educators, psychologists. For this article, we examined the most important methodological challenges that arise when conducting research across languages, some which have long been acknowledged in relevant literature. Specifically, focused related to word reading, spelling, passage comprehension, writing, ranging from target skills, constructs, assessment issues matching samples measurement factorial invariance issues. We conclude although theoretical applied addressed literature, date, happened only with limited relevance reading writing languages. The discussion provides evidence a neuroscience perspective promote useful insights greater rigor

Common Patterns of Prediction of Literacy Development in Different Alphabetic Orthographies
Previous studies have shown that phoneme awareness, letter-sound knowledge, rapid automatized naming (RAN), and verbal memory span are reliable correlates of learning to read in English. However, the extent to which these different predictors have the same relative importance in different languages remains uncertain. In this article, we present the results from a 10-month longitudinal study tha...
متن کاملFoundation literacy acquisition in European orthographies.
Several previous studies have suggested that basic decoding skills may develop less effectively in English than in some other European orthographies. The origins of this effect in the early (foundation) phase of reading acquisition are investigated through assessments of letter knowledge, familiar word reading, and simple nonword reading in English and 12 other orthographies. The results confir...
متن کاملPhonological development in relation to native language and literacy: variations on a theme in six alphabetic orthographies.
Phonological development was assessed in six alphabetic orthographies (English, French, Greek, Icelandic, Portuguese and Spanish) at the beginning and end of the first year of reading instruction. The aim was to explore contrasting theoretical views regarding: the question of the availability of phonology at the outset of learning to read (Study 1); the influence of orthographic depth on the pa...
متن کاملIssues in methodological research: perspectives from researchers and commissioners.
OBJECTIVES (1) Methodological research has few well-defined tools and processes analogous to those available for reviews and data collection in substantive health technology assessment. (2) This project was set up to obtain researchers' and others' views on the innovative projects on research methodology under the NHS Health Technology Assessment Programme and the usefulness of the research. (3...
متن کاملMethodological Issues in MIS Cross-Cultural Research
This chapter presents a discussion of methodological issues that are relevant and idiosyncratic to cross-cultural research. One characteristic that typifies cross-cultural studies is their comparative nature, i.e., they involve a comparison across two separate cultures on a focal phenomenon. When differences across cultures are observed, the question arises as to whether the results are true cu...
